Automate volume changes in GarageBand for iPad. You can automate volume changes over time using automation curves. When you show track automation, each track’s automation curve shows the volume level over time. You can create volume changes by adding automation points, and dragging them to different values. For instance, the most common musical phrase in blues is the 12-bar blues progression, which is I-IV-V7. To play a bluesy sounding harmonica progression, you would just want to use a piano or a guitar to outline those chords, and then you can go ahead and jam on the harmonica as you want, as long as you’re in the key of C.

I’m using GarageBand on my iPad Air 2, iOS 11. Tried to do a song in 12/8. Tried heavy swing in 4/4 (totally wrong feel), & tried 6/8, but you need two 6/8 bars to equal one 12/8 bar & using the drum sequencer...well, it doesn’t work out well. Had to have each section as one bar because the pattern wasn’t the same for all 4 beats. Lots of 1 bar sections, no thank you. Does anyone know if there’s any help on the horizon from Apple? 12/8 is pretty common when you‘re doing blues or country or a whole host of other genres.

OPEN THE FILE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE FOR SCREENSHOTS OF WHAT THE PROJECT SHOULD LOOK LIKE

Set Up:

1. Open GarageBand - Select “Songwriting”
2. Title your project “12 Bar Blues”
3. Delete Voice Master Track
4. Delete Acoustic Guitar Master Track
5. Drag back your drum beats so they last for 12 bars

Bass Line:

1. Select the “Muted Bass” Instrument master track
2. Open “Musical Typing”
3. Go to “Control Menu” and check off “Count In” - this will give you four beats to get ready with.
4. Record Roots of the 12 bar blues
   1. Do---|Do---|Do---|Do---|Fa---|Fa---|Do---|Do---|Sol---|Fa---|Do---|Do---||

Edit:

1. Open Track Editor
2. Quantize Note Timing - 1/4 Note
3. Drag notes to correct pitch
4. Drag notes so they start at the beginning of the bar
5. Close track Editor

Chords:

1. Select the piano master track
2. Copy and paste the muted bass track into the piano part
3. Add a New Track - Software Instrument
4. Drag the New Piano Master Track to the top of the list
5. Open “Musical Typing”
6. Record the following with four notes per bar:

GAGA | GAGA | GAGA | GAGA |

CDCD | CDCD | GAGA | GAGA |

DEDE | CDCD | GAGA | GAGA |

on the keyboard this would look like

1. Quantize Note Timing - 1/4 Note
2. Edit incorrect pitches
3. Adjust Muted Bass so the volume is all the way up
