Dual Monitor Hacks Mac
Once you have the screens set up how you’d like, you’re done! For dual monitors on an Apple computer, you’ll need to use Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C cables and adapters for any non-Mac monitors you’d like to use. After connecting the two monitors, the Mac should detect the displays automatically. Would love an answer for this. This entire thread is dedicated to this topic, so you already have your answer. If you need it re-hashed, well then here you go: Only one external display is supported on the M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. On your primary display (i.e., your MacBook or iMac screen), click the “Arrangement” tab. All detected displays are visible on the diagram. Click and hold on a display to show a red outline on the corresponding monitor. Uncheck “Mirror Displays” if you see the same image on both.

This does work. Basically, the new window opens in between desktops (spaces) and as long as you complete the move to the full screen app, you can then move the new window to the second display. This seems it may be a glitch more than a feature but I'll take it. Anything to make my second monitor useless while in full screen mode!
It works... the 2nd app must not be running when you invoke it, and can't be in fullscreen mode. I'm happy to have that space back though!

How do I invoke the second app while it's not running while half way between two spaces. if anybody could provide some more detail about this I'd really appreciate it as I hate having that blank 'fabric' space with my multi monitor setup and full screen mode.
Lion did not take anything away. You can use eg Mail exactly the same way with multiple monitors in Lion as in Snow Leopard.
It is bit like somebody gave a you second car (aka fullscreen mode for good number of Apple's own applications) without taking your first car away (non-fullscreen mode). But you like the second car so much that you complain that you want to use it but it lacks in some aspects compared to your existing car.

Okay I got it to work. The secret is to do your partial space switching gesture (for me it's a swipe with three fingers and then in the middle of the swipe without releasing your fingers, press command-space to open spotlight and type the name of the app you wish to launch, then release your fingers after the app has launched.
As the other user said before me, the app must not be open at that time and it must not be in full screen mode. The only disadvantage is that only the first app can be in 'full screen mode' and the app that isn't in full screen mode does not show up properly in mission control or in the app switcher when you press command-tab. Interesting way to use that lost space while one app is in full screen mode, but it's a shame that it doesn't work as well as it could if Apple officially supported this.
Could not get this to work. Please explain 'pause/stop'. If I hold the swipe animation half way through the transition I can see two separate screens, but I cannot interact with spotlight or anything else. I'd really love to get this work.
This is how it works for me:
- make an app full screen
- user 3-finger swipe to start moving the full screen space to the left a little bit
- keep the 3 fingers there, and use the spotlight keys to open spotlight (or use QuickSilver as I do)
- enter the name of the app that you want to add to the full screen space (must not be running) and press enter
- wait until that app appear, then release the 3 fingers.
Note: I had to keep my 3 fingers still, otherwise spotlight or QuickSilver wouldn't respond to my typing. Also, moving the added app around might make it jump to a 'regular' space.
Unfortunately, the iPhone Simulator does not behave this way, so I still can't have Xcode full screen for debugging and run the simulator on the second display. Boohoo.
I had problems to understand this bit as well and I think it's not well described. You have to start the 'other' app without using the mouse - e.g. invoke Spotlight with the keyboard shortcut. I think it's cmd or control and space but I'm not sure as I have changed this setting. I used Quicksilver and I see now, that this is just a trick to move an application window to the 'private' fullscreen space of a fs app.
Open A full Screen App (Safari, for example). Then begin opening a new app (invoke spotlight [command + space] and hit enter, bring up dock and click an icon). As soon as you begin opening that app (clicking enter, clicking the icon, etc.) begin a gesture to swap spaces (3/4 swipe left/right depending on your trackpad set up, or two finger swipe on magic mouse) but don't fully swap spaces. Move to where the animation has kicked and you can see what is in both spaces. The new app should open in the original Full Screen App's Space and can be moved into the remaining Unused space on the second monitor.
I must be doing something wrong. And the loss of the 2nd screen to the fabric is bugging the hell out of me!
hey i figured this out, you must be in the fullscreen app space first, then swipe half way to another space left or right, next launch the app via spotlight release your fingers.
The trick is, you have to be in the space where the fullscreen app resides.
I believe it is a bug, as sometimes I get similar behaviour when I open an app, and I then start screen swiping before the app has finished opening. Or when I start up (I use the auto-resume features heavily), and occasionally the order the app's restore in results in the windows of an app not running in fullscreen mode, opening up on a desktop belonging to an app in fullscreen mode.

I would say it's absolutely a bug - I have also seen several bugs with Fullscreen mode in general. As nice as it would be to use FS without losing my second monitor, I have not tried and would never use this hint. I don't want to start relying on functionality that I'm almost sure Apple will 'fix' in the next update or two. So, like the guy with the car metaphors, I say if you want to see multiple apps, don't use FS.
Great find and great tip! It's worth mentioning that the second app must not be assigned to a desktop, otherwise it will just open in that desktop rather than in the Full screen item.
I can now run Apple Mail as full screen and iCal on my second monitor.
Further to this. It has always annoyed me is that when I'm in a full screen app, like Apple Mail, the menu bar is hidden, so therefore I can't see the time. I know I can just lift my mouse to the top and the Apple menu bar appears. What I did instead is download 'Simple Floating Clock', a free app, chose the settings as digital clock, placed it as far top on the main screen, and quit it. Then I used the hint on this page and opened the app, then I can move it to an empty spot in the Apple Mail toolbar. I can now see the time whilst I'm reading/writing emails.
If I was 'programming' inclined, I would write an Apple Mail Extension or plug-in that adds a toolbar item which displays the current time.
Honest question.... If you want to be full screen and still see the menu bar... why not just Maximise the window?

Unfortunately, this feature does not work anymore on my machine after the 10.7.3 update. It seems that Apple has fixed the bug that would allow us to use the secondary monitor...
Or maybe they added a setting somewhere to use the secondary screen, but I haven't found it yet.
