Greentoe Payment Pending

Expert news, reviews and videos of the latest digital cameras, lenses, accessories, and phones. Get answers to your questions in our photography forums. We agree; in a roundabout way I'm saying one should stay atop a Greentoe purchase. Check every two days at least regarding processing, the payment vehicle status (credit card for most people), and shipping status. It's not the same as directly buying from the likes of B&H and Adorama who in most instances make buying almost effortless. I learned about Greentoe, and immediately looked up reviews. Most said it was legit, but as usual there were a few worrysome reviews. After payment you will get information about the retailer that accepted your offer and shipping details. This makes me skeptical about making the purchase first if I can't find a authorized dealer. Greentoe.com don't answer there phones or chat. They selectively email you depending on if they think they getting your money. They will not tell you where there located after many emails. The emails is only way they will communicate with you. I had 6 hdtvs I was bidding on an they canseled all my tvs after I emailed them an complained to them.

I have heard a lot of good news / report on this forum re Greentoe. Because of that, I decided to give it a shot.
This is basically me venting my frustration with them... (so... please bear with me )
Last week, I accepted an offer for EOS R including the adapter for $1875. I had paid the offer promptly on Friday, May 10 through paypal. Despite numerous emails (first email sent on Monday) from me requesting shipping and tracking confirmation, until today, I have not received any info at all from them nor the seller. Granted that Greentoe does not carry the product themselves and sourced it from another / independent supplier / shop. However, since it is their platform, in my mind, they are responsible in working with the seller / shop to get me that information. It is really unprofessional for them to not respond to the email requesting this info, especially since the order has been paid in full.
Have any of you had this kind of experience with Greentoe?

I've had nothing but good experiences with Greentoe. That being said, I've never felt the need to request tracking info. I usually received the item(s) less than a week. Paypal has your back so I would not worry too much. Good luck.

Thanks... I did not worry about the tracking. However, I started to get worried on Monday afternoon when the status still showing pending shipment and because of that I sent them a note to request shipping confirmation. It was great thing that I paid using paypal and am sure that they have my back ...

I think we've gotten spoiled by some vendors and their next day or delivery in a few days. For me, B&H has always had stuff to me in two days even when I don't pay for two day delivery. One of the good things about B&H is they clearly indicate if they have the product in stock and if not, what the normal lead time is.
Recently though a lot of retailers are now using zero stock business plans where they don't order the product from their distribution until they receive an order themselves. It's great for them since it helps their cash flow a lot with no stocking cost. But unlike 20 years ago when we just accepted delivery in weeks, our expectations are now set for a lot faster.
Regardless of model, you would think an email of order acceptance and estimated ship time would be a sensible thing. Hope this works for you and your wait isn't long. Would love myself to get a chance to shoot an R.

You are absolutely correct ... I have gotten really spoiled by Amazon and other vendors with their quick shipping and / or notification of shipping.
What bothers me and therefore the label of unprofessional conduct, was the fact that I sent several emails that went unanswered. I am fine if they tell me that the product is back ordered and the estimated shipping date is XXXX ... just need to manage the expectation - especially when they have been paid in full.

Greentoe is a broker. Looking at my past 5 or so orders, I believe Greentoe has different shipping notification procedures depending on the vendor or how purchase was arranged. In some cases Greentoe has prearranged a purchase price, while in others the customer makes an offer and the vendor accepts it using the Greentoe portal. Most of my purchases are the latter and Greentoe has sent me tracking info the same day or within 24 hours of acceptance. Of course, the item is shipped directly from the vendor, so leads me to believe the vendor must enter tracking info before Greentoe can pass it along to me. Next, the item does not always ship immediately from the vendor and can be pending shipment up to a few days. I realize Greentoe has no control on the actual shipping date, just like eBay has no control with individual sellers. However, I would never order from Greentoe if I was in a rush, and my cameras or lenses have always arrived within a week. The actual vendor can be one of the biggest camera retailers in the US or a small shop most people have never heard about, so their shipping procedures will vary greatly. A big retailer might ship by 2-day Air while a small seller may ship regular insured Fedex or UPS. If I ever sent a question by email to Greentoe, they’ve usually responded in 24-48 hours. On several occasions, they have actually called me by phone.

You keep mentioning paid in full, but Greentoe is a broker. Their cut is a very small percentage just to put that into perspective.

Am not really sure what you meant with your point in your post above. Yes, greentoe is only a broker and they earn a commission for their service.
I had mentioned that the item had been paid in full because that usually means the product is available on hand / in stock and should be sent very quickly. In the case that the item is not yet available, vendor usually does not pull the money from credit card / PayPal yet... that has been my experience with Amazon (and b&h to some degree). Also since I purchased this through Greentoe AND they earn a commission for this, it is their responsibility to make sure that communication flows quickly between their sources / shops and the buyer - which they did not do in this case.

Can you explain how you paid via Paypal? Every Greentoe deal I have done had me entering the CC info and them accepting my offer or counter offer. I did not get to choose to pay after using my preferred method of payment.
BTW I have a pending transaction with the now. Just keeps saying pending payment for the last two days now. $85 on a Magmod kit, which doesn't seem like a deal until I figured it saved me $12 vs buying locally.

GT can be a nightmare on a transaction that goes wrong. Take the time to read the thread at https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1578267/0. What happens with various transactions is all over the map and ranges from great to disastrous.
One thing that needs to be remembered is that GT being a broker probably does not get paid until such time as the item is shipped, or certainly near the end of the transaction. Thus they have little interest in the buyers battle with a seller except to pay lip service. The seller can immediately process payment even though they might not ship for some period of time. So you are up to the mercy of the seller. If they are reputable and perhaps you recognize the name, then you might be in good shape.
On credit card transactions; my bank has issued me a debit card to use for transactions on potential sites that may be less than reputable. I only keep about $200 on that card and replenish if a purchase might exceed that. If a buyer decides to “hit” the card illegally, then he soons gets a message that there are insufficient funds, I’m notified, and can close the card account out. This has happened once, guess what, it was a GT transaction.
There are times I wish we did things the old fashioned way; it was called “cash on delivery”.

This, the FM story, and many others I've heard are enough for me to avoid using them. While some may be good sellers there are some that come up often and it's just not worth it to me to save a small percentage over Adorama/B&H.

Here’s their phone number straight off the website: 1-888-840-0464. Call and ask the status of your order, why they didn’t bother to confirm tracking or reply to your numerous emails. Tell us what they say. Anyway, that’s what I would do.

I did not do anything special... When I clicked on to make an offer, I was given choices of payment method and paypal is one of those choices.

Thanks for the info / link to FM. Did not realize that there were some bad experiences with GT.
The good think is that I paid through paypal and had initiated a dispute with the payment last night and heard from the seller / shop early this am and they claimed that they were out of stock for the body only version. Instead, they offered me to send the body from the kit version and they will remove the lens. I accepted this offer and hopefully will get the camera by tomorrow.

Wished I had come across that story before I pulled the trigger.... did cursory research in FM (not in great details) and did not see that thread unfortunately. However, I remember that a lot of members here had expressed good experience with GT (again could not find the thread unfortunately ). The savings may not be that significant but given that both B&H and Adorama (and Amazon) start charging sales tax, it adds up pretty quickly (no tax on my purchase from GT as the seller is from different state - saves approx. $150 on tax plus another $125 on the price of the body incl. adapter)

I had called them twice - one on Tue pm and one on Wed pm - both were answered by a recording saying that they cannot answer the phone and to send them email or use the form on their website. Have you ever spoken to their CS / rep? If you have, you must be very lucky
I sent emails to them on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. They finally responded to my email on Wed when I requested them to cancel the order as I had submitted a claim through paypal. Also, finally this morning, the seller / shop finally emailed me to let me know that they were out of stock and had asked if I am willing to accept a body from the body / lens kit, which I accepted.
The camera is expected to arrive tomorrow.

I've been called by their people a number of times, especially after I place an offer. A few times they called just to ask if I needed anything. When they first started it was more often, so maybe it is because I was an early customer. I understood they were trying to broker a deal, and each sales rep varied but was nice about it. Once I asked via customer survey why don't they carry TV's and they now carry TV's. Then I asked about musical instruments and studio gear, and now they carry them. It's not always perfect because I once called about high-end photo printers and they responded with regular office inkjets. But it didn't cost me anything, so was worth a shot. Admittedly, I haven't run into a bad vendor, but that doesn't mean others haven't. Twice I've been mildly concerned by small vendors I never heard of, but they came through with fast delivery or threw in some free lens cloths.
Glad you're getting your gear. I had the exact same thing happen with a camera body through Cameta a long time ago. Oversold during a sale, so asked if they can send a kit with lens removed and that was fine by me.
